Found crochet doilies with glue on wooden dining table and chairs
Feminine Urge reflects on how gender stereotypes are communicated through the everyday domestic objects we make, use, and pass down. The jagged edges of the broken wooden dining set are carefully covered and repaired with stiffened crochet doilies, challenging the textiles' traditional uses as decoration and furniture protection. These doilies are now an integral part of the furniture itself, reimagining binary understandings of gender and questioning how we perceive materiality. The work reflects on how gender roles are constructed, performed, and reinforced through spaces and materials.
Feminine Urge was featured in LOOK, a curated group exhibition at Second Shift Studio Space, and published by Peters Valley School of Craft as part of their Timeless Textiles exhibition-in-print. The sculpture later appeared in Leidy's undergraduate capstone, Counterpoint, at the University of Minnesota's Katherine E. Nash Gallery in 2025.
